Minerals | Chrome Ore

The minerals Chromite and Magnesia chromite are the only sources of chromium ore.

Ferrochromium and Metallic Chromium are the two primary by-products of chromite refining; the ore smelter process varies significantly for each of these products.

The chromite ore (FeCr2O4) is reduced with either Silicon or Aluminium in an Alumina Thermic reaction to produce Ferrochromium, then in a two-step roasting and leaching procedure to produce pure Chromium.

Due to its great heat stability, chromite is often employed as a refractory material.
